Kelham Island has been named as one of the coolest places to visit in Britain. The list, compiled by Travel Supermarket, gave insight into some of the most up-and-coming areas in the country.

Kelham's own leaning tower

Sheffield’s own ‘leaning tower’ has been restored as part of a modern housing project. The gatehouse and clock tower at the former Green Lane Works in Kelham Island, which date back to 1860, was so dilapidated that it was placed Heritage England’s ‘at risk’ register.

Kelham named on Sunday Times 'Best Places' list

Kelham Island has been named in the Sunday Times’ Best Places to Live in Britain Guide, with Little Kelham homes being mentioned as one of the highlights of the area.
The prestigious guide, which is published each year, seeks out the places with the best homes, amenities and quality of life in the country and lists them over two weeks.
Kelham Island was also named in a Times list of the Hippest Places in the country.

As an increasing number of residents move into new houses at Kelham Island, the dream of creating a distinct enclave of Sheffield with its own sense of community is becoming a reality.

The Little Kelham development of 107 homes has expanded from the site of the former Green Lane Works into a £50 million scheme taking in 98 more properties where the Richardson’s cutlery factory once stood opposite the Fat Cat pub.

THE SHEFFIELD TELEGRAPH - Gatehouse scheme is next step in regeneration of Sheffield’s Kelham Island

A former industrial works in Kelham Island is set to be turned into apartments, offices and a café bar under the next stage of the area’s regeneration.

The old Green Lane Works will be converted and extended to form a new mixed-use development – with the disused factory’s Grade II* listed entrance gate and clock tower preserved as its focal point.

A Sustainable Future at Kelham Island

Green developer Citu is pushing ahead with plans to follow up on the award-winning Greenhouse scheme in Beeston, Leeds with a £26m project in Sheffield’s Kelham Island.
Sustainability is at the heart of the new scheme, where 107 houses are being built alongside some retail and leisure outlets and commercial spaces for creqtive businesses. The company will being work shortly and the first properties will come to the market in January 2014.

Kelham Island has a village-like feel but is just 1.6 miles from Sheffield’s bustling city centre and its major train and bus stations. Walking to Kelham Island from the city centre takes about 20 minutes.


Shalesmoor is the nearest Supertram stop to Kelham Island. From there, it’s just a five minute walk to Little Kelham.
